Competitors And Audiences

Competitors & audiences

Tell IndexPine who you compete with for rankings and who you are writing for β€” two settings that fundamentally shape every article.

Competitor and audience settings are among the most impactful configuration choices you will make. Competitors drive keyword discovery and content gap analysis. Audiences shape every sentence the AI writes.

Adding competitors

Add up to five competitor domains (e.g. ahrefs.com, semrush.com). These should be sites that compete with you for the same search traffic β€” not necessarily the same industry. IndexPine analyses these domains to:

  • Find topics they rank for that you have not covered (content gaps).
  • Identify their most-linked-to content (high-authority topic signals).
  • Detect outdated articles where their content is stale and you can publish something more current.
  • Benchmark your topical coverage against theirs visually in the Authority Map.
Choose SERP competitors, not business competitors
The best competitors to add are the sites that consistently appear in Google results for your target keywords β€” even if they are not in your business category. A SaaS company writing about spreadsheet tips might want to add spreadsheeters.com rather than another SaaS company whose content does not overlap.

Defining audience personas

Add one or more audience personas. Each persona is a one-paragraph description of a specific type of reader. The more concrete the better. Examples:

  • "Sarah, a Head of Marketing at a 50-person B2B SaaS company. She manages a team of three, has a $200k annual marketing budget, and is looking for scalable content strategies. She knows what SEO is but does not write code."
  • "James, a freelance web developer with 3 years of experience. He works on projects for small businesses and is always looking for tools that save him time. He is comfortable with technical documentation."
  • "Priya, a first-time homebuyer in the 30–35 age range. She is comparing mortgage options and trying to understand terms like LTV and PMI for the first time."

IndexPine uses the active persona when choosing examples, analogies, vocabulary, and assumed knowledge level within each article. If you have multiple personas, you can pin a specific one to individual articles or let IndexPine pick based on the keyword.
